How takt time is calculated
Minimum Stations = Total Cycle Time ÷ Takt Time (round up)
Takt is the heartbeat demand imposes on your process. With 430 minutes of available time and demand of 430 units, one unit must leave the line every 60 seconds — regardless of how the work is divided up. Available time excludes breaks and planned stops, but not unplanned downtime; downtime is a loss against takt, not an adjustment to it.
Takt vs cycle time — the comparison that matters

Planning to run exactly at takt is a common mistake: any minor stop immediately creates shortfall. Most lean practitioners plan cycle time at roughly 85–92% of takt so the line can absorb variation without overtime.
Using takt for line balancing
Dividing total work content by takt gives the theoretical minimum number of stations. If total cycle time is 115 seconds and takt is 60, you need at least 2 stations (1.92 rounded up) — and the 0.08 slack tells you the second station will be lightly loaded. That's the starting point for a balance chart: distribute work elements so every station sits just under takt, and the emptiest station becomes your kaizen target for eventual elimination.
Common takt time mistakes
- Subtracting downtime from available time. This inflates takt and hides the capacity problem downtime is causing.
- Using average demand across seasonal swings. Compute takt for the demand period you actually staff for; recalc when demand shifts more than ~10%.
- Confusing takt with target rate. Takt is set by the customer, not by management ambition. A target above takt means planned overproduction.
